“My books are actually the love stories for science lovers” – Shuvadip Ganguli

Shuvadip Ganguli, Author of The Invisible Creation

This week, we had an interesting interview with Shuvadip Ganguli, the author of two scientific books— “The Invisible Creation” and “Physics My Love”. An M.Sc. in physics and love for writing is what it took for Shuvadip Ganguli to write two amazing books that are being loved by hundreds of readers in India.

Shuvadip Ganguli calls his books the love stories for science lovers. Read on as he talks about his latest book, life as a writer, concept behind his books, lessons learnt along the way, and much more.

1. Let’s begin with a brief introduction of yours, and a brief overview of your latest book— The Invisible Creation: Looking into the Deep.

Hi, I am Shuvadip Ganguli. I was born and raised in West Bengal, India. I’m a student of Physics and an author of science-related books. I’ve graduated from the University of Burdwan and studied M.Sc. in Physics from Vidyasagar University.

I always try to explain the wonders of science easily through my writings. ‘PHYSICS My love’ is my debut book. My Latest book is The Invisible Creation: Looking into the Deep. It’s a non-fiction science book. The mysterious invisible area of the universe is explained in this book. This book will give you a transparent idea and knowledge about this deep part of our universe.

The subject matter is presented in a simple way, step by step. This book may be of interest to students, teachers, as well as general readers without a science background who are interested in astronomy. It is published by Notion Press in India and Kindle eBook edition also available by Amazon KDP.

2. Where did you get the idea behind the concept of The Invisible Creation?

When I was a school student, I read many books based on space and cosmology, but none of them could cover the entire realm of it. As I grew older a passion grew inside me – Why not write a book which will provide knowledge to all the basic facts encompassing this field of Physics.

The book would be a step by step measure to gather all information and provide all of it to the reader rather than to buy different books. In this book, you will get all the topics stitched together in one place. I have tried my best to provide all of them in one platter starting from the tiniest to the biggest.

When I decided to write this book there was thought always in my mind, to explain everything in an easy way for all types of readers (not only for science students or teachers). The physics of Blackhole, White hole, Dark matter, and Dark energy is very complex and hard to understand for general readers. But, in this book, I try to represent those as simple as possible with various examples and illustrations.

3. How much time did you take to finish the book? Did you follow a writing routine?

Interestingly, I’ve decided to write The Invisible Creation before my first book Physics My Love. It was in the year 2017 when I was pursuing my graduation. All the necessary research works for the content of this book took about one year. Then, at last, I started writing it in February 2019.

The most difficult part of writing such books is to explain every complex phenomenon in a simple way to the readers. This book is for all types of readers, with or without a physics or science background. I designed the cover and all interior myself. So, it took about one more year to complete the first draft. Then after some final touches, I’ve published the final manuscript in March 2020.

No, I did not follow any specific routine. As a postgraduate student, I was busy with my study. So, whenever I had got any free time, I used it. Generally, I prefer nighttime for writing.

4. What were the challenges that you faced to find the publisher for your book?

I didn’t go for traditional publishers as they took too much time. I wanted the book to get published in March 2020. Then I’ve published this book with Notion Press Publishers. They helped me to publish my book on the day I wanted. I like their support because my first book Physics My Love also published by them in 2019.

I wanted to launch my book on March 14, 2020, on the occasion of Sir Albert Einstein’s birthday. I am grateful to them as they made this possible.

5. Three lessons that you learnt after publishing your first book— PHYSICS My love? How did these help you to craft the second one?

There are many lessons that help me a lot. Firstly, if you read my two books then you can notice the interior design of my latest book is much better than the first one. I think book designing is a vital part. Many authors just complete the manuscript and another team from the publishing company designs the cover and interior, DTP etc.

If I want, I can do this. But I always prefer to do it my own.

The worst part of the post-publishing process is marketing. As a student without any income, I can’t afford a marketing company to promote my books now. So, I have to self-promote my books on different social media and the Internet. From the first book, I gather experience in marketing that helps me a lot in the case of the second one. Thanks to you and other interviewers who help us to spread the word to the world.

The third most important thing is that my first book received many appreciations. But, besides those, I also got much advice from my teachers, friends and readers to make my book better. I always follow their advice that helped me to make my latest book more perfect and enjoyable.

6. When did you realize that you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve written many articles on science and physics in various science magazines in India from childhood. I believe that I get this passion for writing from my grandfather. He is also a writer. I read various books and follow their representations. That encouraged me to be a writer. Interestingly, I always thought that I’ll write books after completing my post-graduation. But I couldn’t control. I’ve published my debut book in the first year of my post-graduation.

7. Most of the authors today choose to write love stories and romance. Being a writer who loves physics & science, where do you see yourself among the other writers?

Ya! That’s an interesting question. I don’t compare myself with other authors. Every writer has their own world and imagination to represent what they think. If you think something is important and helpful for others, then it is best to write a book on that topic. That’s why we write books.

The love story and romance writers have their own domain. Sadly, I don’t read love stories or romantic novels, but many people read them. I am always interested in writing books in which I can put my scientific thoughts that keep my mind buzzing.

Physics is not a subject for me that I pursue only for a degree; it is the first love of my life. That’s why the title of my first book is ‘Physics My Love’, and the subtitle is ‘Story of Physics for Everyone’ where everyone can understand why we should love this dynamic subject. It was an elementary introduction to the fascinating world of Physics.

In my books, I try to unwrap the hidden mysteries of our Universe, which is, I think almost an irresistible attraction for every science student and science lovers. I try to share the real beauty of physics to others. So, actually, you can say that it is the love story for science lovers.

8. Whom do you consider your icons when it comes to writing? Any favourite authors?

Not one, there are many authors. I love to read all types of thriller, horror, detective novels and non-fiction in Bengali and English. I’ve not any specific author as my icon. In the field of science non-fiction, I like the writing of Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Stephen Hawking, Fritjof Capra, Mani Lal Bhaumik, Jayant Narlikar.

If you asked for fiction, I prefer most of the Bengali authors like Satyajit Ray, Samaresh Majumdar as detective novels writers. I also love the novels of Amish Tripathi. His mythological concepts and representations are too good, and I enjoy them very much.

9. Have you received awards for your books?

Recently I’m awarded as Author of the year at NE8x Online Literature Festival 2019 for my debut book.

10. A quick-fire round (answer in up to 50 words):

Books that have influenced your life.

Wings of Fire: An Autobiography of APJ Abdul Kalam and COSMOS by Carl Sagan.

Define your love for physics in up to 5 words.

Not only love, it’s my life.

What compliment do people give you the most?

Many readers of my book contact me on Facebook or Instagram. Most of them told me that they love my books for my simple and lucid writing style. I am a science student, not a literature person. So, I never used hard words in my books. Even a school kid can understand it easily.

What advice did you get that was the most rewarding?

One of my teachers once said, always try to spread science as simple as possible. I follow those words very much through my writings. That’s why people love my books as I said before.

A life-lesson that science taught you.

Science and Physics make me a more imaginative and patient person.

11. What’s next for Shuvadip Ganguli? Are you already working on a new book?

I have a plan and also a list of topics that I can cover in my next books. This is just the beginning. But these books are full of researches. So, I need more time. Maybe I’ll write some sci-fi novels in future.

I’m sure people will like these books if they love science.
