An interview with Patricia Antone, Author of “Can’t Outrun Destiny” & 9 more books

Patricia Antone interview

Patricia Antone is one of the topmost writers, having written more ten books. Readers are loving her books and appreciating her write-ups for the heart she puts into her books.

This week, I got a chance to talk to Patricia Antone regarding her books, life as a writer, latest books, favorite authors, upcoming creations, and much more.

1. Let’s begin with a brief introduction of yours, and a brief overview of your latest book— Can’t Outrun Destiny.

I have been into creative writing for years, but into self-publishing for the last 5 years. My latest book- Can’t Outrun Destiny (A Destiny’s Path Novel), came out in spring 2020. It is the first instalment of a new series I am working on.

A Scottish family is mired in prophecy and magic that spans over generations.

2. How many books have you written to date? Which one is the closest to your heart, and why?

I have written ten books. The book closest to my heart is Can’t Outrun Destiny. This novel was years into construction. It wasn’t what I wanted it to be every time I touched it, so it would go back in a drawer. When I became a member of a local writing group and joined a critique group at the same time, it was the breakthrough I needed.

3. How much time do you generally take to finish a book? Do you follow any writing routine?

I really have no routine. My writing is usually at night or when I get my days off. I work a day job in the Heating/Plumbing industry.

4. When did you realize that you wanted to be a writer?

I didn’t. 😀

My two children headed off to begin their lives and the empty nest slapped me. When my kids left, it was rewarding and sad at the same time. They have been extremely encouraging, along with my husband in this venture and are very proud.

It was my husband who, as a gift, sent me to an adult learning class, which in turn, led me to the writing group I am a member of.

5. What are the three lessons that you learnt after publishing your first book? How did these help you craft the next ones?

Patience. Keep learning. Accept criticism.

The ‘accept criticism’ one was the rough part. My first large critique session, I braved reading a scene I needed help with. The warm encouragement was such a confidence booster.

One of the writers told me later, “Even if it was awful, we’d never tell you that. We’d help you make it great.” I keep that in my mind when I ask for feedback on everything new I write.

6. Whom do you consider your icons when it comes to writing? Any favorite authors?

I am always asked this, and I have to say, I don’t have a “favorite” per say. The list of the authors I read is as long as my arm. I actually have a spreadsheet of the paperbacks I own, A Kindle, and a Nook. I’m going admit I am a little bit of a book hoarder. I love the feel of the pages, holding the book, and seeing them all in my bookcase.

7. Could you please share three pieces of advice for the emerging writers?

Never be afraid to learn. My first year with the CNY Romance Writers was workshops, feedback, and rewriting. That year was amazing, and Catching A Cowboy’s Eye is the book I released as a paperback. They are the reason the book was finished and released. All their help. I can’t say enough about all the members.

8. Being a mother of two, how do you manage the work-life balance?

I didn’t start writing until my two boys were older. Their Junior year of high school, thereabouts. They are also very encouraging. They have come to signings, helped me with my social media, and been patient when I ask for their opinions.

My boys are adopted from Siberia, Russia and being just about 3 weeks apart in age, they both left the nest together for college and now are graduated and landing jobs. The writing was help through the empty nest, as it took the time I set aside for my now young men who need me less.

9. A quick-fire round (answer in up to 50 words):

a) Books that have influenced your life.

Too many to list!

b) Things you love to do when you are not writing?

I am a gardener. I love my flowers.

c) What compliment do people give you the most?

I am genuine.

d) What advice did you get that was the most rewarding?

Walt Disney has a quote –

“If you can dream it; you can do it.”

That hangs over my desk. My first book signing one of the mentors joked. Cinderella had an amazing time at the ball. I did, and to have one of my mentors share it with me – no words.

10. What’s next for Patricia Antone?

I have more books to Destiny’s Path Series to come. There are (so far) right now three, but I have a couple more ideas to toss about. My Falling SEALs Series has a new Novella due out, and as I love these guys to pieces, I have ideas for a few more of the guys. Shh, don’t tell them!

——-

Thank you so much for having me for a visit. I hope whoever discovers my books, enjoys them, and as long as they do, I’ll keep writing!

I stepped out of my little comfort zone and it has led me to amazing things. We fail when we don’t try. Take care!
