“I consider my words as the sound of Piano that can heal the suffering” – Soumya Harichandan

author soumya harichandan interview

Soumya Harichandan is one of the youngest poets to be interviewed on my blog. She is a schoolgirl who wrote soul-soothing poetry titled Healing Piano. Soumya is passionate about writing, singing, art and craft, as well as photography.

Read on as poet Soumya Harichandan talks about her debut book, life as a writer, struggles, favourite authors and books, inspirations, future plans, and much more.

1. Let’s begin with a brief introduction of yours and a quick overview of your debut book—Healing Piano.

Hi, I’m Soumya Harichandan, the poet of the book “Healing Piano”. I was born and raised in Odisha. I’m a student who appeared for her class 12th examinations this year. I’ve been writing since the age of 15. I’m always fascinated by the beauty of poetry.

Apart from writing, I’ve completed 4 years in singing, I’ve been doing arts, and crafts since my childhood. In these recent years, photography has been my favourite hobby.

“Healing Piano” isn’t just a book but a piece of my heart that wants to heal everyone who suffers. I named it so because research says that Piano is one of the best therapies for mental instability, and I consider my words as that piano which can help others by comforting them in their tough times.

2. What was your inspiration behind writing the Healing Piano book?

There are two things that inspired me.

First; Teenage is such a messed-up period for everyone. And me being an emotional creature needed a way to get the best out of my mood swings, and emotions.

Second; in these recent years, small poems are on-trend, and somewhere I felt that the beauty of the long and narrative poems is fading day by day. And my wish to conserve the beauty of long, and narrative poems inspired me a lot.

3. What sort of reviews are you getting for your book?

Being a student without income, I couldn’t reach a high number of readers but those who have read my book, have complimented me for the perfect use of words with the feelings, for the simple style of conveying stories in fewer words, and for inking poems that fluttered and warmed their hearts.

4. When did you realize that you wanted to be a writer?

In the two initial years of writing, I never thought of being a writer. It was maybe because I was always confined to my world. But when I got exposed to the world of poetry, and noticed the decrease in the presence of long, and narrative poems, I got a strong urge to revive that trend of long poems again. I honestly want people to spare time for such beautiful pieces of stuff, and not skip them by just looking at their length.

5. What were your reactions when the first copy of your book hit the market? Would love to know about your emotions at that moment.

Well, first time at anything is always special. Healing Piano being my first book will always stay in my heart even though it couldn’t reach a huge audience. I always thank god for everything, and if it wasn’t for him then I might not have ever discovered that I’m capable of writing stuff. When my book was released on Amazon and Flipkart, I felt happy and wished that it could help others.

6. Whom do you consider your icons when it comes to writing? Any favourite authors?

Well, my Mom is great in dealing with emotions, and she is also awesome in philosophy though she never had it as her subject. She has been my constant source of inspiration.

I’m a huge fan of Rumi, Sarah Kay, R.M drake, Lang Leav, Rabindranath Tagore, J.K Rowling, John green and Atticus. Right now, I have so much to explore, and I believe there are many more great people I must discover during the journey of my writing.

7. Please share with our readers some of your favourite lines from the book.

Ahh!! That’s a quite difficult question. Still, there are some lines from my book which I personally love.

“Loving you unconditionally even with distance was my choice, not any reciprocation to your fake love.”

“Come to meet me often,
don’t let me die even after death
longing for your warm presence
in the graveyard of lonely souls.”

“She was a damn mystery but not impossible to understand.”

“I’m a night lover,
The poet of darks,
where stars never shine,
and the moon isn’t a lover.”

“You’re an open book with unanswered corners.”

“Someday your inner soul will knock out the devil inside you.”

“If you love your life then you have got the key to your prisons.”

8. What is that dream goal that you want to achieve before you die?

Actually, there are many things that I want to achieve before I die. Mostly I want to do something valuable to repay back God for this life. I want my dad to say one day, “I’m proud of my daughter” to everyone.

I want the whole world to know my mother, my ultimate role model. I want to be enough successful to boost my passion for writing. And apart from all these life stuff, I want to do adventurous fun like Sky diving, Paragliding, and Hill climbing.

9. A quick-fire round:

– Three favourite books of all time.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen,

The fault in our stars by John Green,

And The god of small things by Arundhati Roy

10. What’s next for Soumya Harichandan? Are you working on some new book?
