A couple of weeks ago, I and my co-worker dealt with exchanging books. While I gave her Paulo Coelho’s The Pilgrimage, she gave me Who Moved My Cheese book by Dr Spencer Johnson.
Had heard a lot about this book and was really excited to read the masterpiece. Also, the book is only 96-pages long, so one can complete it within a couple of hours.
Who Moved My Cheese Book Review
Spencer Johnson has started the book with an inspiring quotation from A.J. Cronin’s novel “The Citadel”.
“Life is no straight and easy corridor along which we travel free and unhampered, but a maze of passages, through which we must seek our way, lost and confused, now and again checked in a blind alley.
But always, if we have faith, a door will open for us, not perhaps one that we ourselves would ever have thought of, but one that will ultimately prove good for us”― A.J. Cronin
What is Who Moved My Cheese about?
Coming to the Who Moved My Cheese story and summary, it starts with a get-together of former school friends, where they talk about the way their lives had taken place. Every one of them was facing some kind of unexpected CHANGE in their lives. But, none of them knew how to handle the change. That’s when Michael starts narrating the story “Who Moved My Cheese”.

Mice and the little-people
In the Who Moved My Cheese story, there are four amusing characters—two mice named Sniff and Scurry, and two little people named Hem and Haw. They live in a Maze where they look for Cheese to nourish themselves and seek happiness.
Here, Cheese is a metaphor for the things we desire to have in our lives, like a job, a relationship, money, a big house, health, recognition, freedom, or even hobbies like cricket or gym. And Maze is the world where we look for our Cheese.
The meaning of Cheese is different for everyone, and we chase our cheese thinking that it will make us happy. If we find our cheese, we get attached to it. And if our cheese is taken away or we lose it, we get stressed and upset.
So, the mice and the little-people look for cheese in the maze, every day. A day comes when the little-people starts finding a huge pile of cheese at the same place. So, they start living near to that place. They no longer need to go around in a maze to find new cheese every day.
But, a day comes when Who Moved My Cheese characters don’t find their cheese at that place. They had got used to getting it at the same place and now find it difficult to cope with change. They become frustrated and blame whoever had stopped putting the cheese in their place.
On the other hand, the mice continued to search for new places as usual and fed themselves.
I really loved the concept of the story and the metaphors author Spencer Johnson has used for it. The Who Moved My Cheese book teaches us that what we are afraid of is never as bad as what we imagine. The fear that we let build up in our mind is worse than the situation that really exists.
Definitely, a must-read for everyone. It can help in changing our attitude towards change.
